Although India did win the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, they have not been able to repeat the feat ever since. The problem that seems to surface is in the selection of the side. The confusion that arises is whether to play the tried-and-tested players or ones who are relatively less experienced. The mascot named 'Thambi' or younger brother in Tamil, the language of Tamil Nadu, where the Olympiad is hosted was launched by Chief Minister M.K.Stalin on late Thursday. The dhoti has white and black checked border and the shirt sports the words 'Believe Chess'. Stalin also launched the 44th Chess Olympiad logo consisting of different chess pieces.

The 20-year-old Narwal, who took the P4 mixed 50m pistol SH1 gold with a Paralympic record in his debut Games, teamed up with Singhraj, also a Paralympic medallist, and Akash to aggregate a total of 1581 to finish behind China (1628). Turkey took the bronze with a total score of 1565. The top Indian shooters, however, faltered in the individual event with Akash the only Indian to qualify for the P4 - Mixed 50m pistol SH1 finals.

Sen, ranked world No 9, defeated his Danish opponent Rasmus Gemke 21-18, 21-15 in 54 minutes in the men's singles. Sen, who was part of the Thomas Cup winning team, will next face Chinese Taipei's third seed Chou Tien Chen. While Sen registered easy win, India's ace shuttler Sindhu faced a stiff challenge from home favourites Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. However, Sindhu managed to defeat her 23-21, 20-22, 21-11 in the second round.

India started their Asian Cup Qualifiers campaign on a decent note by grabbing all three points with a win over Cambodia at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium on Wednesday. The 37-year-old Chhetri was the difference-maker once again as his brace (14', 59') gave India the victory. India were dominant for almost the entire game and didn't give the opponents a sniff of getting on the scoresheet. However, the skipper was disappointed that his team couldn't add more to the tally.

Besides, the excellent performance of Indian athletes and sportspersons in other sports suggested that there is more to sports than just cricket. Some cynics and pessimists have already made doomsday forecasts that cricket will soon stop becoming an obsession with fans as they switch to other genres of sports and entertainment.
