Team India qualifies for WTC final against Australia in June after New Zealand beat Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka was the other team in contention for a spot in the WTC final. But now after losing the first Test to New Zealand by two wickets, it has cleared the path for India to go into the final and meet Australia in the summit clash. With the Ahmedabad Test now heading towards a draw, Sri Lanka needed to beat New Zealand 2-0.

Ahead of the start of day five's play on Monday, the BCCI said in a statement, "Shreyas Iyer will take no further part in this Test. A specialist opinion will be sought." Earlier, during day four's play on Sunday, Iyer did not come out to bat, with the BCCI saying that he had gone for scans after the right-handed batter complained of pain in his lower back following the third day's play and the medical team monitoring him.

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu saved penalties at the start of the game and at the end of the shootout as Bengaluru FC won the tie-breaker after the fixture was tied on aggregate 2-2, following Mumbai City FC's 2-1 result after extra time. After 16 penalties were scored, Sandhu saved Mehtab Singh's penalty before Sandesh Jhingan scored the winning spot-kick to give the Blues a 9-8 win on penalties.

In the penultimate game of the season, Gokulam Kerala's Sergio Mendigutxia's second-half penalty proved to be the decisive goal. Though Axar has picked only two wickets in the series, he has managed to be a handy contributor with the bat lower down the order. "The talk in the first Test was to carry forward the confidence."
