1st T20I: Mitchell, Conway half-centuries propel New Zealand to 176/6 against India

Conway made a 35-ball 52, laced with seven fours and a six and attacked well against the spinners. On the other hand, Mitchell opened up in the later half of the innings to finish on 59 not out off 30 balls, hitting three fours and fives sixes. He also took 27 runs off the final over by Arshdeep Singh to inject some momentum in the innings after losing wickets in quick succession in the middle overs.

Electing to field first, Parshavi justified captain Shafali Verma's call to bowling first with a spell of 3-20 in her four overs and helped India restrict New Zealand to a mere 107 in 20 overs. In reply, Shweta asserted her run-making prowess by hitting her third half-century in the competition and remained unbeaten on 61 off 45 balls to complete the chase in 14.2 overs.

Three match referees and 10 umpires make up the 13-woman team in what is a landmark moment for women in cricket. Three of those 13 officials will be Indians -- match referee GS Lakshmi and two umpires, Vrinda Rathi and N Janani. Lakshmi, one of three match referees in the upcoming tournament, passed a decade of refereeing in T20Is last year.

Suryakumar, the top-ranked batter in T20Is, was recently named the winner of the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year 2022 award for becoming just the second batter to score more than 1000 runs in a year in the format with his astonishing 360-degree strokeplay. He was the highest run-getter in T20Is in 2022, scoring 1,164 runs at a ridiculous strike rate of 187.43.

Batting legend Brian Lara to guide West Indies teams as Performance Mentor

The announcement that Lara has agreed to assist CWI as a Performance Mentor - working across all international Teams and with input into the West Indies Academy -- was made on Thursday. Lara's first assignment will be with the West Indies Test squad. He has joined the Test squad in Zimbabwe where he will assist in the team's preparations ahead of the first Test match in Bulawayo starting on February 4.

Both players engaged in high-quality rallies from the start but it was the Indian who went into the first mid-game break with an 11-8 lead. He built on his lead to take the first game convincingly. After the change of ends, Christie turned the table in his favour with a clever mix of backhand and forehand shots and force the match into the decider.
