President Biden condemns attack on Rushdie
US President Joe Biden has expressed "shock and sadness" over the attack on Indian-born author Salman Rushdie and described him as someone who stands for essential universal ideals of truth, courage and resilience. "Jill and I were shocked and saddened to learn of the vicious attack on Salman Rushdie yesterday in New York," Biden said in a statement issued by the White House on Saturday.
Ukraine calls for sanctions on Russian nuclear industry
Russia is using the nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine to frighten people and to blackmail the Ukrainian leadership and the whole world, Zelensky said in a video address broadcast on Saturday evening. Russia, a nuclear power in terms of weaponry, is "building nuclear power plants in several countries", dpa news agency reported. Suspect faces attempted murder charge after attack on Salman Rushdie
The suspected attacker, 24-year-old Hadi Matar of Fairview, New Jersey, has been transported to Chautauqua County Jail and will be arraigned later, dpa news agency reported. A statement on the New York state police website said: "On August 12, 2022, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrested Hadi Matar, 24 of Fairview, NJ for Attempted Murder 2nd degree (B Felony) and Assault 2nd degree.

Pakistan to attend counter-terror drills in India for 1st time
The counter-terrorism exercises are scheduled to be held in October in Manesar, Haryana, under the banner of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), The Express Tribune reported.
