India recorded its fastest growth in Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections in 13 months during June, with gross revenues climbing 13.9 percent year-on-year to Rs 1.95 lakh crore, aided primarily by a sharp rise in tax receipts from imports.
The latest figures compare with gross GST collections of Rs 1.71 lakh crore in June 2025 and represent a marked improvement from May 2026, when revenue growth had slowed to 3.2 percent year-on-year.
June's performance was the strongest since May 2025, when GST collections had registered an annual increase of 16.4 percent.
The biggest boost came from import-linked GST receipts, which surged 34.6 percent year-on-year to Rs 60,038 crore, up from Rs 44,600 crore in the corresponding month last year.
Domestic GST collections, however, grew at a comparatively modest pace of 6.5 percent to Rs 1.35 lakh crore, indicating that the increase in overall revenues was driven largely by external trade.
After adjusting for refunds, net GST collections rose 11.2 percent year-on-year to Rs 1.62 lakh crore.
Refunds also remained significantly higher during the month. Total refund payouts climbed 29.1 percent from a year earlier to Rs 32,436 crore, partially offsetting the gains recorded in gross tax collections.
For the April-June quarter of FY27, gross GST collections reached Rs 6.32 lakh crore, reflecting an 8.4 percent year-on-year increase. Net collections during the same period rose 7.1 percent to Rs 5.40 lakh crore, pointing to a steady, though not broad-based, start to the financial year.
Among the major states, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest growth in June, with GST collections rising 19 percent to Rs 9,165 crore from Rs 7,675 crore in the year-ago period.
Assam registered the second-highest growth at 17 percent, followed by Punjab at 14 percent, while Gujarat reported a 12 percent increase.
Maharashtra, which contributes the largest share of GST revenues, posted a 9 percent rise in collections to Rs 30,714 crore. Karnataka recorded growth of 10 percent, while Delhi saw collections increase by 8 percent.
Performance remained subdued in several other large states. Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh each recorded a 5 percent decline in GST collections, Tamil Nadu registered a 2 percent contraction, and Jharkhand witnessed a steeper fall of 16 percent.
