India logs 12,608 new Covid cases, 72 deaths
The new fatalities increased the nationwide death toll to 5,27,206. The active caseload is 1,01,343, accounting for 0.23 per cent of the country's total positive cases. The recovery of 16,251 patients in the last 24 hours took the cumulative tally to 4,36,70,315. Consequently, India's recovery rate stands at 98.58 per cent.
Pakistani prisoner killed, cop injured in firing in Jammu
"A police constable and a Pakistani (terrorist) Mohammad Ali Hussain alias Qasim/Jehangir, Commander of LeT, operating from jail, were injured during a weapon recovery operation by the police in Arnia sector near the International Border at Toph village. Both were shifted to the hospital for treatment where the injured terrorist succumbed," police said on its twitter page. Pakistani prisoner Muhammad Ali Hussain had been instrumental in drone weapon dropping as he is a commander of LeT.

Airlines will have to take action against flyers without mask, says DGCA
The regulator said that in view of the rise in the number of Covid cases, the airlines have been advised again on August 16, to strictly comply with Covid protocols inside the aircraft. Airlines have to ensure that all passengers are wearing face masks properly and arrange for their proper sanitisation throughout the journey. "In case a passenger does not comply with the directions, strict action will be taken by airlines against the passenger," said the regulator.

A bench headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana orally observed that the court cannot prevent political parties from making promises. However, it added that the question is what constitutes right promises? The bench, also comprising Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Hima Kohli, further queried, "can we describe the promise of free education as a freebie? Can free drinking water, units of powers, etc., be described as freebies?"

The active caseload also declined to 1,05,058, accounting for 0.24 per cent of the country's total positive cases. The recovery of 15,220 patients in the last 24 hours took the cumulative tally to 4,36,54,064. Consequently, India's recovery rate stands at 98.57 per cent.

India, Sri Lanka to issue stamps on democracy to mark 75 years of Independence
An MoU is to be signed between the two countries to issue a set of stamps under the theme of �Democracy', Sri Lanka Cabinet spokesman and Media Minister Bandula Gunawardena said on Tuesday. The postal departments of India and Sri Lanka are to jointly issue the stamps to mark the 75th anniversary of Sri Lanka's Independence from British rule.
