The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has strongly recommended that the Indian Navy should have three aircraft carriers. The recommendation by the committee has said that future acquisition plans need to take into consideration the requirement to enhance combat capabilities, Economic Times reported. The committee made multiple suggestions on several issues including the winter clothing for troops, infrastructure projects by Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and the carrier requirements at the coastlines. The government has said that the requirement of the third Aircraft Carrier will be worked on but no specified timeline has been given, as per the report.
Key Points:
1. "Taking into account the long coastline and hostile adversities on both sides of the Indian peninsula, an aircraft carrier on both sides of the coast is quintessential to uphold operational requirements. However, repair work of a huge vessel such as an aircraft carrier takes a considerably long time. Therefore, to bridge operational deficiencies thus arising, three aircraft carriers are an unavoidable requirement to meet any eventualities," the committee was quoted as saying by the ET.
2. The committee made recommendations related to the requirement of bulletproof jackets for soldiers and details of winter clothing for troops posted on the northern borders but the government's response on them were deemed as classified, the report said.
3. BRO was also asked to stay focused on infrastructure projects along the northern borders and the feasibility of engaging another organisation for the development of coastal roads needs to be considered as an interim measure, the report added.
