Jasprit Bumrah added another landmark to his illustrious career on Tuesday (July 14), scripting history during the opening ODI against England at Edgbaston by becoming the first Indian cricketer to register 150 wickets in ODIs, 200 wickets in Tests and 100 wickets in T20Is.
The Indian fast bowler entered the match with 234 Test wickets and 121 T20I wickets to his name. His 150th ODI scalp came in the 14th over of England's innings when he removed captain Harry Brook.
Brook had only just arrived at the crease when Bumrah produced a moment of brilliance with his third delivery to the batter. Bowling from wide of the crease, he initially shaped the ball as though it would angle in before extracting late movement away. Brook committed to the shot, only to edge the delivery to first slip, where Rohit Sharma completed a sharp catch.
The achievement places Bumrah in an exclusive club occupied by only two other international cricketers. New Zealand's Tim Southee has claimed 164 wickets in T20Is, 221 in ODIs and 391 in Tests, while Bangladesh's Shakib-al-Hasan has taken 149 wickets in T20Is, 317 in ODIs and 246 in Tests.
Tuesday's appearance also marked Bumrah's return to ODI cricket after a lengthy absence. His previous match in the format came in the 2023 World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad. India had managed his workload by keeping him out of ODI action, despite his absence being keenly felt.
With the next ODI World Cup only 15 months away, the team has brought Bumrah back into the 50-over setup. His spell at Edgbaston underlined how quickly he was able to make an impact in a format he had not played for years.
Bumrah's milestone wicket also brought another record. It was his 31st ODI wicket in England, making him the first Indian bowler to claim more than 30 wickets on English soil.
In doing so, he moved ahead of Ravindra Jadeja, who has 30 wickets in England. Among Indian fast bowlers, Bhuvneshwar Kumar follows with 28 wickets.
The landmark also made Bumrah the second-fastest Indian pacer to reach 150 ODI wickets, achieving the feat in 90 matches. Only Mohammed Shami, who reached the mark in 80 games, and Kuldeep Yadav, who did so in 88 matches, have got there quicker for India.
