IPL 2022, Day 18 Highlights: Chennai Super Kings beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 23 runs
In a high-scoring thriller, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Tuesday defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 23 runs. It was the first win of CSK in IPL 2022 and the first victory for Ravindra Jadeja as a captain. Here are the key highlights of the game:
No marked gains for Indians; Afridi climbs to No. 10 in T20I rankings for bowlers
India's all-format skipper Rohit Sharma is further down at 14th, while former skipper Virat Kohli is 16th. In the T20I Rankings for bowlers, Pakistan's Shaheen Afridi's 2/21 in the one-off T20I against Australia sees him climb four spots to No.10. Despite the best efforts of the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year 2021 in the penultimate over, Australia got over the line with five balls to spare.
IPL 2022: Will DK's RCB showing revive his India T20 World Cup dreams?
Former England captain Nick Knight said as much when he commented that he sees in Karthik a cricketer who can perform the job of a finisher in this year's T20 World Cup if he continues to finish matches for his Bengaluru franchise in IPL 2022. In IPL 2022, Karthik has been a critical finisher for RCB, making 131 runs and averaging the same number with a strike-rate of 218.33, especially in matches against Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals.
My long association with MI will not come in the way of doing my job for PBKS: Rahul Chahar
The 22-year-old Chahar also indicated that he is making "specific plans" for the MI batters, who have struggled for form in IPL 2022, unable to open their account on the points' tables after four defeats. Chahar is currently in great form, having picked seven wickets from four games so far. He was an integral part of Mumbai Indians for four seasons, from 2018 till 2021.
Some distance away from acquiring all the leadership qualities, but getting there: Jadeja
Jadeja had come in for criticism following the defending champions' string of four consecutive losses in IPL 2022, with critics says that CSK had lost its winning ways after Mahendra Singh Dhoni relinquished captaincy of the four-time IPL champion side. But on Tuesday night, CSK notched their first win in five matches, defeating the in-form Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 23 runs in a high-scoring match, with Robin Uthappa and Shivam Dube scoring masterful knocks of 88 and an unbeaten 95, respectively.
Security cover in CSK reason behind my fearless unbeaten 95 v RCB: Shivam Dube
The middle-order batter had been patchy in the four matches prior to the big 'Southern Derby' on Tuesday. In the opening game of the season against KKR, Dube managed only three and again scored three runs against SunRisers Hyderabad in the fourth match of the season. In between, he had scores of 49 (vs LSG) and 57 (vs PBKS), respectively. And, while he was scoring, the inconsistency was not really lending solidity to the middle order.
Champions League shock as clinical Villarreal eliminate Bayern Munich
The German giants started highly motivated, knowing that they had to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg, while Villarreal defended deep and lurked for their counterattack opportunities. Bayern controlled the proceedings on the pitch but lacked accuracy in front of the target as only Jamal Musiala's header forced Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli into action once at the half-hour mark.
Real Madrid hold on after brave Chelsea fightback in Champions League
Chelsea led 3-0 on the night and were 10 minutes away from going through after losing the first leg 3-1 before Rodrygo took the game into extra-time where Karim Benzema scored the goal that took Real Madrid through on a dramatic night in the Santiago Bernabeu. Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel said after his side's 3-1 defeat in Stamford Bridge a week ago that his side had no chance of getting back into the tie, but it seems the coach was bluffing as his side tore into Real Madrid.
Minerva Academy crowned champions of 2022 Mina Cup
Minerva, who have defeated teams like Go Pro Sports Club, Barcelona before entering the finals, opened the scoring in the 13th minute. A throw-in down the left led to a bit of a scramble in the box, but the quickest to react was Thiyam, who fired the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0. Thiyam was indeed unstoppable as he scored in the very next minute again. La Liga HPC was clearly hassled, and Minerva took the chance to open them up again.
Men's hockey nationals: Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh win on Day 7
In the first pool game of the day, Delhi Hockey dominated the match against Hockey Rajasthan with Bharat (11', 13', 29', 52') scoring four goals in the match. Braj Gopal (13', 41') and Dheeraj Vats (45', 55') also scored two goals each, while Sumit Kumar (33'), and Rabbani (58') to complete the scoreline of 10-0.
