Opting to bat first, New Zealand touched 197 for three at one stage which seemed they would go on to 300. However, Washington produced an exhibition of drift and dip, varying his pace effectively and turned the game on its head for India, keeping New Zealand to just below 260.

Meanwhile, New Zealand, leading 1-0 in the three-match Test series, hope to achieve something no other side has since 2012 by winning a Test series in India. New Zealand skipper Tom Latham said pacer Matt Henry is ruled out with a glute niggle and left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner replaces him in the playing eleven.

"I can tell you that batters are alright when you bowl that 135-140 kmph speed, but when you bowl high 150s, I don't care who it is, no one wants to face that. He looks like someone who is a complete package, if Mohammed Shami is not ready, at least get him (Mayank) in the squad. I think he would do pretty well on these Australian wickets," Lee told Fox Cricket.

Both the players are getting their match fitness after injury had ruled them out or restricted them from playing enough at Bengaluru, where India lost. Pant was on his knee in injury during New Zealand's first innings and didn't come out to further wicketkeeping through the balance of the match with Dhruv Jurel stepping in to play behind the stumps though Pant is expected to be fit enough to return to the pulpit for Pune.
