Twitter phasing out its controversial image cropping algorithm
The company said on Wednesday that not everything on Twitter is a good candidate for an algorithm, and in this case, "how to crop an image is a decision best made by people". Twitter started using a saliency algorithm in 2018 to crop images and improve consistency in the size of photos in users' timeline. However, people on Twitter noted instances where its model chose white individuals over Black individuals in images and male-presenting images
Qualcomm unveils new Snapdragon 778G 5G mobile platform
The chipset is slated to power upcoming high-tier smartphones from Honor, iQOO, Motorola, OPPO, realme and Xiaomi. "Snapdragon 778G was developed to address the growing demand by global OEMs for more platform options in the high-tier," Kedar Kondap, vice president of product management, Qualcomm Technologies said during the company's annual 5G summit on Wednesday.
India 2nd to US in asking Facebook for user data in H2 2020
The restricted access was due to violating Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, including content against security of the state and public order. "Of these, 10 were restricted temporarily. We also restricted access to 54 items in compliance with court orders," Facebook said on Wednesday in its latest Transparency Report for the July-December period in 2020.
Microsoft to retire iconic Internet Explorer on June 15, 2022
Over the last year, Microsoft is moving away from Internet Explorer support, such as an announcement of the end of IE support by Microsoft 365 online services. "With Microsoft Edge capable of assuming this responsibility and more, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be retired and go out of support on June 15, 2022, for certain versions of Windows 10," the company said in a statement on Wednesday.
Facebook expands Covid-19 announcement tool to India
The tool was first launched in the US. In India, the social media platform partnered with 33 states and union territories to roll this out in their respective jurisdictions. It will give health departments the ability to push out timely, credible Covid-19 and vaccine information to people in their local communities or state jurisdictions
The world now has over 3B active Android devices
Sameer Samat, VP of product management at Android and Google Play, revealed this during the Google I/O Developer Conference 2021. Google added over 500 million active Android devices since I/O event in 2019 and one billion devices since 2017.

The company said that it is rolling out the new feature on iOS and soon on Android. "When there's a blue circle around someone's avatar, tap it to see their Fleets.A(And if you see a purple circle around someone's avatar, tap it to join their Space)," the company wrote on its platform. Recently, the micro-blogging site added a collection of its animated stickers and emojis -- the latter of which the company calls "Twemoji".
