IIT Madras has again ranked at the top of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, making it the seventh year in a row that it has topped the overall category.
The Ministry of Education published the 10th edition of NIRF rankings on Thursday. Under the university category, IISc Bengaluru topped the list, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, at second position, and Manipal Academy of Higher Education at third position.
Under the colleges category, Hindu College, Delhi, held onto its first position, while Miranda House and Hansraj College occupied the second and third spots.
IIT Madras also topped the engineering group, with IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay at close second. Amongst management schools, the best one in the nation was IIM Ahmedabad. Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, headed the pharmacy group, and AIIMS New Delhi remained India's top medical college.
The NIRF rankings this year evaluated institutions in a total of 17 categories, namely overall performance, universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, open universities, skill universities, state public universities, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The institutions were judged on five key parameters: teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.
Initiated in 2015 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (the present-day Ministry of Education), NIRF works on offering a clear and comprehensive format to measure higher educational institutions across India.
