India reports 40% jump in new Covid cases, Delhi government calls emergency meet

The daily positivity rate has been recorded at 2.7 per cent and the weekly positivity rate stands at 1.71 per cent. There were 1,396 recoveries in the last 24 hours and active caseload stood at 13,509. The Delhi government has called an emergency meeting after the Covid cases spiked on Wednesday. A total of 300 new Covid infections in the last 24 hours were recorded in the national capital, which is a rise over Tuesday's 214 cases, as per the Delhi government health bulletin.
17 passengers left behind at Vijayawada airport as flight to Kuwait leaves early

The passengers were shocked when they reported at the airport at 11 a.m. but were told that the flight had left at 9.55 a.m. The departure time of the IX695 flight was 1.10 p.m., as per the tickets booked by these passengers two days ago. The passengers complained that they had no prior information about the change in the departure time, adding that they were asked to report at 11 a.m., but were not informed about the new departure timing.
Delhi reports 300 Covid cases, positivity rate nears 14%

Two Covid-19-related deaths have also been reported in the same time span. The positivity rate of the city has risen to 13.79 per cent. The number of active cases stands at 806 out of which 452 patients are being treated in home isolation. With 163 patients recovering in the last 24 hours, the total number of recoveries so far has gone to 19,82,029, while Delhi's total caseload is 20,09,361 and the death toll in the city has risen at 26,526.
Election Commission in no hurry for Wayanad, announces bypolls to 1 LS, 4 Assembly seats

However, the poll panel said that it is in no hurry to announce bypoll to the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency after Rahul Gandhi's disqualification from the Lower House. As per the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Rajeev Kumar, bypoll on the selected seats will be held on May 10 and the results will come out on May 13.

The term of the 224-member Assembly ends on May 24. As per Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, total electors in Karnataka are 5.2 crore. He informed that the total number of 80 plus year-old electors stands at 12.15 lakh.
Pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal again 'dodges' Punjab Police

An Innova vehicle, with three people onboard, comprising Amritpal, was stopped by the police on Tuesday night at a checkpoint but they managed to flee in the dark, an official familiar with the development told IANS. The police were chasing the car from Phagwara. The car was later found abandoned near Gurdwara Bhai Chanchal Singh on.

The trial court had discharged the 11 accused in an order pronounced on February 4. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma framed charges against nine accused under various offences, including rioting, unlawful assembly and more. However, the court has partially discharged them of various other offences.

The court, presided by Justice N S Shekhawat, was hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by advocate Imaan Singh Khara seeking the release of Amritpal Singh from alleged police custody.  At the hearing, Punjab Advocate General Vinod Ghai confirmed that Amritpal Singh had not yet been arrested. 
Atiq Ahmed gets life term, brother acquitted

Earlier in the day, the three were held guilty by the court in the case. The court, however, acquitted Atiq Ahmad's brother Ashraf along with six others. It may be recalled that after the killing of BSP MLA Raju Pal on January 25, 2005, Umesh Pal, then a zila panchayat member, had told the police that he was a witness to the murder.
