CJI-designate promises year-round constitution bench, reforms in case listing, mentioning
In his address at the farewell function of Chief Justice N.V. Ramana organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Justice Lalit said he intends to make the listing of cases clear and transparent, a clear regime for mentioning urgent matters before respective benches, and one Constitution bench functioning throughout the year.

Justice Ramana said, "Let all of us march forward with the discussion and dialogue in the process of giving speedy and affordable justice to the common mana," and he would not be either the first or the last to make contribution towards the development of the institution. He said the people will come and go, but the institution remains forever, and emphasized on protecting the credibility of the institution, important to command respect from the people and the society.
India reports 10,256 new Covid cases, 68 deaths
The nationwide death toll has now increased to 5,27,556. The active caseload dipped to 90,707, accounting for 0.20 per cent of the country's total positive cases. The recovery of 13,528 patients in the last 24 hours took the cumulative tally to 4,37,70,913. Consequently, India's recovery rate stands at 98.61 per cent.
SC frames legal questions on issues relating to freebies, refers case to 3-judge bench
On August 24, the Supreme Court queried the Central government, why it can't form a committee to examine the impact of freebies promised by political parties to induce voters, and also the government can call for an all-party meeting to examine the issue.
In a first, Supreme Court live streams proceedings
"Please take notice that on the eve of laying down the office of the Chief Justice of India, the proceedings of the Hon'ble Chief Justice Court i.e., Ceremonial Bench on August 26, 2022, 10.30 a.m. onwards shall be live streamed through the NIC Webcast portal," said a notice issued by the apex court, adding that the link could also be accessed from the website of the Supreme Court of India.

Twitter, IRCTC representatives to appear before Parl panel today
As per the Lok Sabha, the panel will hear the views of the representatives of Twitter India and IRCTC on citizens' data security and privacy on Friday. The committee will hear the views of individuals, stakeholders and experts on issues related to digital platforms, technology and gig economy relating to the subject citizens' data security and privacy. According to reports, the IRCTC has more than 10 crore users and it wants to monetise the data.
India condemns 'horrific attack' on Salman Rushdie
A spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, Arindam Bagchi, said in a media briefing: "India has always stood against violence and extremism. We condemn the horrific attack on Salman Rushdie and wish him an early recovery." Rushdie, who has a multi-million-dollar bounty on his head, was stabbed while he was on stage readying to speak at an event in Chautauqua, about 550 km from New York City.
Delhi HC refuses stay on Agnipath scheme, asks Centre to file detailed reply
A division bench headed by Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma granted four weeks to the Centre for filing a detailed response in the matter and slated it for further hearing on October 18. Refusing to pass any interim order, the bench, also comprising Justice Subramonium Prasad, said it will be hearing the matter finally. During the course of the hearing, the court noted that the bunch of pleas are related to various issues of recruitment for various posts in the armed forces and said the Centre has to give the details in this regard.
