The top court clarified that it did not grant permission for remission to the convicts, instead it asked the government to consider. A bench headed by Chief Justice and comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi and Vikram Nath said merely because the act was horrific, is that sufficient to say remission is wrong? The Gujarat government released the convicts on Independence Day, which has created a huge political controversy.
PM security breach in Punjab: SC panel holds Ferozepur SSP responsible for lapses
On January 12, the Supreme Court had appointed retired top court judge Justice Indu Malhotra to head the committee to investigate Prime Minister Narendra Modi's security breach in Punjab. Chief Justice N.V. Ramana then had said the panel would inquire into the causes of the security breach, persons responsible for the breach, and also measures to be taken in the future to prevent security breach of the Prime Minister and other constitutional functionaries.
India logs 10,725 new Covid cases, 36 deaths
On Wednesday, the country had recorded 10,649 Covid cases. With 36 more Covid deaths, the nationwide toll has reached 5,27,488. The active caseload of the country has come down to 94,047 cases, accounting for 0.21 per cent of total positive cases. The recovery of 13,084 patients in the last 24 hours took the cumulative tally to 4,37,57,385. Consequently, India's recovery rate stands at 98.60 per cent. India's daily positivity rate has marginally risen to 2.73 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate currently stands at 3.20 per cent.
Pegasus panel report in SC: No conclusive evidence to show spyware in 29 phones
Chief Justice N.V. Ramana read the report of the committee in the open court on Thursday. He said the committee recommended the amendment to laws on surveillance. The CJI said the committee in its report mentioned that 29 phones were submitted to the Pegasus panel, however Pegasus spyware was not found. The report added that in five phones some other malware was detected, 'but it cannot be concluded that it was Pegasus'

Ramana and also comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi and Vikram Nath, will take up the plea seeking a direction to cancel the remission granted to 11 convicts. A bench headed by the CJI will also take up the batch of petitions seeking a probe into the Pegasus snooping case, wherein a court-appointed panel headed by former apex court judge, Justice R.V. Raveendran has filed a report.

Residence for 6 months, 1 yr security: Centre amends rules for benefits to SC judges
Judges, who retire from the Supreme Court will be entitled to a rent free Type-VII accommodation at Delhi (other than the designated official residence) for a period of six months from the date of retirement. "A retired Chief Justice or retired judges shall be entitled to a security cover round the clock at residence in addition to round the clock personal security guard for a period of one year from the date of retirement," said the notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice.
'Not against govt policy or scheme': SC on plea against freebie promises by parties
A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana said the court's intention was to initiate a wider public debate on the issue of freebies and it was suggested that an expert panel should be formed to examine the issue. The bench, also comprising Justices Hima Kohli and C.T. Ravikumar, said: "We are not against any government policy. We are not against any scheme..."
IAF sacks three officers for misfiring of BrahMos missile into Pakistan
The IAF in a statement said, "BrahMos missile was accidentally fired on 09 March 2022. A Court of Inquiry (CoI), set up to establish the facts of the case, including fixing responsibility for the incident, found that deviation from the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) by three officers led to the accidental firing of the missile."
DRDO, Navy successfully flight-test vertical launch short range surface-to-air missile
The flight test was carried out from an Indian Naval Ship against a high-speed unmanned aerial target for demonstration of vertical launch capability. The missiles, equipped with indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) seeker, intercepted the target with high accuracy, the defence ministry said in a statement. The VL-SRSAM system has been indigenously designed and developed by DRDO.
