Reply in English to representations in English, Madras HC to Centre

"Once a representation is given in English, it is the duty of the Union government to reply in English only," it said. The direction by a division bench of the High Court's Madurai bench comprising of Justices N. Kirubakaran and Justice M. Duraiswamy came on a Public Interest Litigation filed by Madurai MP, Su Venkitasan, seeking English alone be used in all communications between the Centre and state governments.
SC permits mining baron G. Janardhana Reddy to visit Ballari

A bench of Justices Vineet Saran and Dinesh Maheshwari said: "It is directed that the condition imposed to not visit these three places in bail order be modified." The top court modified the condition imposed by it in its January 20, 2015 bail order to allow Reddy to visit and stay in Ballari for eight weeks. Reddy was granted bail in illegal mining case registered by the CBI on December 7, 2009.
Delhi's first smog tower to be operational from August 23

During an inspection of the development of this much talked about project on Thursday, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that the smog tower will operate at full capacity after the monsoon season. "Chief Minister Arvid Kejriwal will inaugurate the smog tower on August 23. Thereafter, experts will ascertain its impact on pollution. Based on the results, we will take a decision on installing more equipment," Rai told the press.
Nothing on record to show Tharoor incited Sunanda Pushkar to commit suicide: Court

In the 176-page order, special judge Geetanjali Goel said: "There is nothing to demonstrate any overt act on the part of the accused (Tharoor) and only on the ground that he continued the alleged affair with MT (a Pakistani journalist) (even if it is assumed) and exchanged messages with her, it cannot be presumed that he had abetted the commission of suicide by the deceased."
AIIMS Officers Association warns of strike by month-end

The Officers Association of AIIMS has submitted a memorandum to the AIIMS administration with their demands, saying cadre review has not been done since 1992 and the Health Ministry and AIIMS should seriously consider the matter. Officers Association of AIIMS President Ajeet Singh said that they have written many times to the Health Ministry in the past, but got no response.
Govt issues notification on electronic monitoring, road safety

The rules specify the detailed provisions for placement of electronic enforcement devices . In the notification, the ministry has asked the state governments to ensure that electronic enforcement devices are placed at high-risk and high-density corridors on the National Highways and state highways and at critical junctions at least in major cities with more than one million population.
Covid testing in India touches 50 crore-mark

With an average daily testing of more than 17 lakh in August, India has tested 50 crore samples across the country till date, achieving the milestone of last 10 crore tests in just 55 days. On July 21, India had tested 45 crore Covid samples, which touched the 50-crore mark on August 18. This has been enabled by rapidly increasing the testing infrastructure and capacity across the country.
Afghan nationals flock to embassies in Delhi for visas

Some Afghan nationals said they have been told by the embassies that they will accept them as refugees in their countries and give them visas. Muskan, an Afghan citizen, told IANS, "We got a message from them that you come to the embassy, you will get a form to fill, while we will cooperate with all the Afghan citizens in Delhi."

Rana said that he believes that Taliban has done no wrong by taking over the control of Afghanistan. "Taliban has actually liberated their country," he told reporters. The 68-year-old poet further said that India has no reason to worry from Taliban in Afghanistan. "Taliban are not terrorists, they can be called 'aggressive", he added.
N.K. Singh replaces former PM Manmohan Singh as IEG president

Former CII Director General Tarun Das is the current chairman of the Board of Governors while Ajit Mishra is the director of the institute. The name of N.K. Singh was suggested for consideration of the general assembly of IEG by Manmohan Singh, widely regarded as the architect of economic liberalisation of 1990s and had served as president of IEG since 1992.
