PMGKAY: 55 crore beneficiaries in May and 2.6 cr in June

Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution, Sudhanshu Pandey on Thursday briefed the media about the progress of foodgrains distribution under PMGKAY-III and the One Nation One Ration Card scheme. Speaking about the "Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY III), the Secretary said that more than 63.67 lakh MT foodgrains have been lifted by the States/UTs from FCI depots.
SC for protecting journalists against sedition unless reports incite violence

In a 117-page judgment, a bench of Justices U.U. Lalit and Vineet Saran relied upon the decision in Kedar Nath Singh versus the State of Bihar (1962), which upheld the validity of the sedition provision but with riders, to quash an FIR against a senior journalist Vinod Dua registered on May 6, last year by Shimla police.

According to data released by the government think-tank, Bihar was last with 52 points while Kerala was on top with 75 points followed by Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu with 74 points each. Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, and Uttrakhand followed with 72 points each, while Sikkim has 71 and Maharashtra has 70.

The Search result sparked an outrage among the netizens earlier in the day, with the Karnataka government threatening to issue a legal notice to the company. "Search isn't always perfect. Sometimes, the way content is described on the Internet can yield surprising results to specific queries," a Google India spokesperson told IANS in a statement.
Biden announces India to receive Covid vaccines from US stockpile

Biden, who has faced international and domestic pressure to share the surplus vaccines, said he was releasing the first set of 25 million doses of which six million will be distributed between India, South Korea, Mexico and Canada. The six million "will be shared directly with countries experiencing surges, those in crisis, and other partners and neighbours", he said without a breakdown of how many will go to India.

Justice C. Hari Shankar said: "If I feel some science is fake... Tomorrow I will feel homeopathy is fake. Do you mean they will file a suit against me? I put in on Twitter. You will say take down the Twitter account." The court emphasised that it is public opinion and has to be tested on the touchstone of free speech. "I do not think your allopathic profession is so fragile," the court told the DMA's counsel Rajiv Dutta.
Maharashtra U-turn: Lockdown restrictions continue in state

"The lockdown has not been lifted (from Friday). The proposal is still under consideration," said an official statement. The state is still not completely free of the Covid-19 infection, with cases still on the rise in many rural areas and the proposals would be considered and implemented after a detailed review of the departments concerned in all districts, it said.

In a 132-page judgment, a three-judge bench, headed by Justice A.M. Khanwilkar said: "The identity of an individual is one of the most closely guarded areas of the constitutional scheme in India." The top court said the expression of identity is a protected element of freedom of expression under the Constitution. The top court judgment came on a batch of 22 petitions challenging the validity of the CBSE's byelaws.
Will maintain stand on policy till India gets PDP law: WhatsApp

The company said that it will maintain this approach "until at least the forthcoming PDP law comes into effect". The reaction came after the Centre claimed that WhatsApp is indulging in anti-users' practices by obtaining "trick consent" from its users for its updated privacy policy, under a game plan to transfer the existing users committed to its policy.
Onus of sustaining ceasefire along LoC on Pak: Army chief

On the second day of his two-day visit to Kashmir to review the security situation along the LoC and in the hinterlands, General Naravane told mediapersons, "We entered this (ceasefire) understanding with Pakistan at the end of February. The ceasefire is holding as of now. The responsibility and the onus of making the ceasefire hold are squarely on Pakistan. We are willing to observe the ceasefire as long as long as they do."
