Why are cancer cases rising in India?

National Cancer Awareness Day is observed every year on November 7 in India, to increase awareness about cancer prevention and the need for its early detection. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), there will be an estimated 12 per cent rise in cancer cases in India in the next five years.

Researchers from The Ralph Veterinary Referral Centre in Marlow, the UK, reported four cases of alpha variant detected in cats and two in pet dogs. The alpha variant -- also referred to as the 'UK' or 'Kent' variant, as well as lineage B.1.1.7 -- was first detected in November in the south-east of England, the report said.
