Janmashtami is celebrated annually to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna, a highly revered deity in Hinduism. The festival is held on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha during the month of Bhadrapada and symbolizes the victory of love, devotion, and justice.
It is celebrated with fasting, prayer, and temple visits. Houses and temples are decorated with flowers and lights, and devotees prepare milk-based sweet dishes, which are symbolic offerings to Lord Krishna.
At midnight, the hour of Krishna's birth, rituals peak with devotional hymns, readings from the Bhagavata Purana, and dramatic enactments of Krishna's early life and his legendary raas-leela. Most break their fast after midnight celebrations with a celebratory meal.
Temples all over the nation continue to thrive with music, dance, and narration, keeping alive the timeless message of Lord Krishna—trust in righteousness, service to mankind, and love of the divine.
