India’s T20I series loss against England has triggered a performance review, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expected to examine the displays of both the players and the coaching staff following the defeat in the fourth match in Bristol.
A BCCI source indicated that head coach Gautam Gambhir’s role will also come under review despite his contract extending until 2027. The scrutiny follows a disappointing run of results for the Indian team in the shortest format.
Led by newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer, India suffered a nine-wicket defeat in the fourth T20I, allowing England to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage in the five-match series. The opening game of the series ended without a result, while India had earlier lost the second T20I by four wickets before suffering a heavy 125-run defeat in the third match, where they were dismissed for 76 while chasing a target of 202 runs.
The latest setback represents India’s second successive T20I series defeat as reigning T20 World Cup champions. Before the England tour, India were beaten 2-0 by Ireland, marking their first-ever series loss against the side.
Both defeats came after the BCCI made a major leadership change, replacing experienced campaigner and 2026 T20I World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav with Shreyas Iyer as the new skipper.
England’s victory in Bristol also marked their first-ever bilateral T20I series triumph over India in a multi-match contest.
Batting first, India posted 158 for 7, with Iyer producing a determined unbeaten 80 from 49 deliveries. However, the captain received limited support from the rest of the batting order, leaving England with a manageable target.
The hosts chased down the total with ease, reaching the target in just 13.5 overs. Captain Harry Brook smashed 79 from 35 balls, while Phil Salt remained unbeaten on 59 from 42 deliveries as the pair produced aggressive half-centuries to seal the victory. England pacers Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue took two wickets each.
India will now aim to end the series on a positive note in the final T20I, while England will look to complete a dominant finish to the campaign.
