ICC Suspends USA Membership for Governance Issues but Permits Participation in LA Olympics

Earlier this year, the 2024 ICC Annual General Meeting saw USA Cricket put 'on notice' for its failure to comply with ICC Membership requirements and issued with a 12-month timeframe to correct its shortcomings. The organization did not, however, implement the necessary corrections to its operations, leading the ICC to take the drastic measure of suspending its membership.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket's membership with immediate effect following concerns over governance, the culmination of an extensive review process covering the operations of the organization and a year-long period of widespread consultations with stakeholders.

Earlier this year, the 2024 ICC Annual General Meeting saw USA Cricket put 'on notice' for its failure to comply with ICC Membership requirements and issued with a 12-month timeframe to correct its shortcomings. The ICC Board reached the decision in a recent meeting, citing USA Cricket's consistent breach of its obligations as an ICC Member under the organization's Constitution, as stated in a release issued on Tuesday evening.

“These include, but are not limited to, the failure to implement a functional governance structure, lack of progress toward achieving National Governing Body status with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), and significant actions that have caused reputational damage to cricket in the United States and around the world,” the ICC said in its release.

With cricket set to return to the Olympics in the T20 format at the 2028 Los Angeles Games—a tournament within the purview of USA Cricket—the ICC stepped forward to safeguard the sport and the players' interests, preserving their participation in LA 2028 intact.

Terming the suspension as "an unfortunate but necessary step to safeguard the long-term interests of the game," the ICC Board assured that USA national teams will still retain the right to play in ICC events, such as preparation for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28).

During this time, the ICC and/or its designated representatives will take temporary control of the management and administration of USA national teams, continue to provide support to players, and maintain momentum for Olympic inclusion.

“This approach reflects the ICC’s firm commitment to upholding the best interests of cricketers in the USA and the sustenance of a High-performance & Player development program which will seek to elevate the stature and capabilities of players representing USA,” the ICC said in the release.
