'Bond Rooted In Ramayana, Mahabharat': PM Modi Underscores India-Indonesia Cultural Ties

Speaking in the Indonesian Parliament in Jakarta, Modi said India and Indonesia are linked through the enduring legacy of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, the ancient seat of learning at Nalanda, and a rich cultural heritage reflected in art, music and architecture.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday highlighted the centuries-old civilisational ties between India and Indonesia, saying the relationship between the two nations is built on a shared history that extends far beyond geography and is deeply rooted in cultural and historical traditions.

Speaking in the Indonesian Parliament in Jakarta, Modi said India and Indonesia are linked through the enduring legacy of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, the ancient seat of learning at Nalanda, and a rich cultural heritage reflected in art, music and architecture.

“We share a connection through Indonesia’s national symbol, Garuda, and through the festive spirit of Bali Yatra. When it comes to taste, it is hard to decide which is crunchier—Krupuk or Papad. Yet, one thing is certain: both spices and bumbu play an integral role in our lives," he added.

The Prime Minister also pointed to the cultural connections embodied in Wayang, dance and music, as well as iconic monuments such as Borobudur and Prambanan, describing them as enduring symbols of the close relationship between the two countries.

Calling for closer bilateral engagement, Modi urged members of the Indonesian Parliament to work towards taking the India-Indonesia partnership to greater heights.

“India, Indonesia, and the Indian Ocean- these names themselves bear witness to our deep-rooted connection. For millennia, our ports have linked us to the rest of the world, and our ships have carried trade and culture to distant lands. We hold immense potential for a future shaped by our maritime ties. Therefore, drawing upon the vastness of this ocean, I urge you today to help elevate the relationship between India and Indonesia to new heights," he said.

Modi said both countries were at a defining point in their histories, with the coming decades presenting significant opportunities for cooperation and shared progress.

“The first quarter of this century has passed, and the coming twenty-five years are crucial for both our nations. Today, standing before you on the great soil of Indonesia, I bring with me the conviction of our shared development. I come with the resolve that India and Indonesia, together, will serve all of humanity," he said.

Referring to Indonesian President Prabowo, Modi ended his address on a lighter note by speaking about the warmth of their personal relationship.

“This morning, President Prabowo spoke about copyright. No one can hold a copyright over this love, this affection, this friendship, or this sense of mutual respect. My friendship with President Prabowo transcends all boundaries of copyright," he added.
