A White House spokesperson stated on Wednesday that U.S. President Donald Trump believes that declaring Palestinian statehood would in effect reward the radical group Hamas, and he will not do so.
The comments came after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made a statement on the position of his nation.
Carney informed journalists that Canada will recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations in September.
As the president said, he'd be rewarding Hamas if he does recognize a Palestinian state, and he doesn't believe they should be rewarded," said the White House official on background. "So he is not going to do that. President Trump's emphasis is on getting people fed (in Gaza)."
The official refused to comment on whether or not the United States was pre-informed about Carney's statement.
