In a ghastly attack in Dallas, Texas, a man of Indian origin was brutally beaten up and decapitated at a local motel.
Local media outlets reported that the victim was Chandra Nagamallaiah, 50, who ran the motel. He was repeatedly hit with a machete by the assailant, leaving him dead. The authorities confirmed that Nagamallaiah was decapitated in the attack.
The sheer violence of the attack has shocked the local community and attracted widespread publicity.
The attacker, 37-year-old Yordanis Cobos-Martinez, has been arrested and is charged with capital murder. Officials said he beheaded Nagamallaiah and dumped the victim's head into a trash can. Cobos-Martinez is being held in the Dallas County Jail pending further legal action. Court documents say he is an illegal immigrant.
Official reports indicate that Nagamallaiah had on Thursday morning told Cobos-Martinez not to operate a faulty washing machine at the motel. Martinez is said to have become upset when Nagamallaiah failed to speak clearly to him and used a woman who was around to translate the message.
A chilling video that has been making the rounds on social media captures Martinez attacking Nagamallaiah with a machete and pursuing him until he was beheaded.
At the time of the attack, Nagamallaiah's son and wife came running out of the front office of the motel to try and intervene. They begged Cobos-Martinez to leave Nagamallaiah alone and attempted to protect him from the blows. In spite of their pleas, the attacker continued the vicious assault.
The video is said to depict Martinez kicking the victim's head into the parking lot of the motel before he picked it up and put it in a dumpster.
Police arrested Martinez as he attempted to leave the scene. The authorities have not given further information about the motive, and the case is still under investigation.
The event has evoked outrage and increased fear among residents and the larger community of Dallas.
