Electric car behemoth Tesla formally announced its foray into the Indian market on Tuesday by launching its rear-wheel drive (RWD) version of the Model Y, which is priced from ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom).

Tesla's official website mentions that the Long Range rear-wheel drive variant of the Model Y costs more at ₹67.89 lakh.

Globally, the Model Y is priced at $44,990 in the U.S., 263,500 yuan in China, and €45,970 in Germany. When compared to the U.S. base price, the Indian launch price reflects a premium of roughly $15,000, prior to the application of any federal incentives.
 

First, Tesla will introduce the Model Y in a few Indian cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. Deliveries are expected to start from the third quarter of 2025.

The RWD model of the Model Y has an estimated 500 km per full charge, whereas the Long Range RWD model has a better claimed range of 622 km.

As far as charging capabilities go, the Model Y features rapid charging, where the RWD trim can add up to 238 km of range in 15 minutes. The Long Range model just does a bit better at this, adding as much as 267 km in the same amount of time.

Performance-wise, Tesla claims that the Model Y RWD can go 0 to 100 kmph in 5.9 seconds. The Long Range RWD does it in 5.6 seconds. Both models have a top speed of 201 kmph.

Tesla's first Indian retail store, described as an 'Experience Centre,' has been inaugurated in Mumbai. Another showroom will soon be set up in New Delhi. The Model Y will go on sale in the three major cities in the initial launch period.

Inside, the Model Y gets a range of premium features such as a 15.4-inch central infotainment screen, an 8-inch rear passenger touchscreen, power-adjustable and ventilated front seats, two-way powered and heated second-row seats, ambient lighting in footwell and door pockets, immersive wrap-around ambient lighting, and a nine-speaker audio system.

During the inauguration ceremony of Tesla's Experience Centre at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, "This is not only the inauguration of an Experience Centre but a statement that Tesla has come to the city of Mumbai which is the entrepreneurial capital of India — not only financial, commercial and entertainment capital.
