India's defence production surges to all-time high of Rs 1.51 lakh crore in FY25, says Rajnath Singh

This number is an 18% increase over last year's ₹1.27 lakh crore and a staggering 90% increase since FY 2019–20, when output was at ₹79,071 crore.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday declared that the annual defence production of India has touched a record ₹1,50,590 crore in FY 2024–25 — an all-time high.

This number is an 18% increase over last year's ₹1.27 lakh crore and a staggering 90% increase since FY 2019–20, when output was at ₹79,071 crore. DPSUs and other PSUs collectively contributed about 77% of the overall production and the private sector took up 23%, the minister said.

The share of the private sector is increased from 21% in FY 2023–24 to 23% in FY 2024–25, which indicates its rising position among India's defence manufacturing space. Singh attributed this feat to collective efforts by the Department of Defence Production, DPSUs, public sector producers, and private sector players, calling it a good indicator of the country's growing defence industrial base.

Both the public and private producers have experienced consistent year-after-year growth, fueled by far-reaching policy changes, greater ease of doing business, and intense focus on indigenisation in the last decade. DPSUs in FY 2024–25 reported a 16% growth in output, while the private sector leading the way with a 28% hike.

This record-breaking feat reflects the increasing pace of the government's drive towards self-reliance in defense production under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat campaign led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi," the Defence Ministry stated.

The emphasis of the government on import reduction dependency, the establishment of a strong defence industry ecosystem, and enhancing export potential is now yielding worthwhile results. With continuing policy support, increased private sector participation, and increasing export capacity, India's defence production should witness continued growth in the coming years.
