When she was questioned about her own romantic life, Neelam stalled before she confessed, "It's practically not there; it's over. I am sick of giving chances again and again. I like boys who have self-respect; I cannot remain with the ones who don't."

Her candor prompted Kunickaa to open up about her own life. "I kept my relationship a secret for 27 years. I finally now spoke about it, and I feel so free," she divulged. Explaning more, she stated, "It was a live-in affair. He was married but living away from his wife. But then he began an affair while he was staying with me and cheated on me. That's when I left him."

For the uninformed, Kunickaa had earlier revealed that she was in a long relationship with noted playback singer Kumar Sanu, whom she shared a relationship that was very similar to that of husband and wife.

Narrating how they met, Kunickaa said their encounter took place in Ooty—she went there for work while Sanu was on vacation along with his sister and nephew. While having dinner one evening, Sanu, who was very drunk and upset, opened up that he was depressed and suicidal. His family members and Kunickaa were the ones who consoled him and tried to offer some strength. It was this emotional moment that sowed the seeds for a relationship that soon stabilized. Soon, Sanu even shifted to a flat close to her residence.

Their relationship strengthened—she regularly swapped food with him, assisted in losing weight for him, and even chose his wardrobe when it came to public appearances. "It almost seemed like I was his wife," she conceded. For respect for his family, however, the couple kept their relationship out of the spotlight.

The romance became stormy when Sanu's wife, Rita Bhattacharya, learned of the affair. Rita lashed out violently—bashing her car with a hockey stick and screaming outside her home, recalled Kunickaa. However, the actress mentioned never resenting Rita. Sympathizing with her emotional outburst as a wife and mother, Kunickaa understood her point of view.
