Released on Saturday, the 'India Box Office Report: Jan-Jun 2025' states that 17 films have crossed the ₹100 crore mark in the first half of the year. This is a sizeable jump from the 10 movies that had reached this figure in the same period last year.

“The cumulative box office for Jan-Jun releases stands at ₹5,723 crore, which is 14 per cent higher than the same period in 2024 and just ₹12 crore short of the 2022 record for Jan-Jun box office,” the report stated.

In contrast to recent years with one or two behemoth hits, 2025 has had to depend so far on a consistent flow of mid-run successes. So far, only one film has crossed the ₹250 crore threshold this year, signaling fewer of the giant blockbusters but mid-to-high runs consistently.

The highest-grossing release of the year until now is "Chhaava", a historical action movie headlined by Vicky Kaushal, which earned a whopping ₹693 crore in the box office. Close on its heels is the Telugu blockbuster "Sankranthiki Vasthunam", which featured Daggubati Venkatesh and recorded astonishing figures across India.

The month of June was a key contributor to the half-yearly total, with over ₹900 crore coming from it. Hindi movie "Sitaare Zameen Par" and "Housefull 5" were top earners, each grossing close to ₹200 crore. Also among the top earners of that month were the Tamil-Telugu bilingual "Kuberaa" and Hollywood Formula One film "F1" starring Brad Pitt.

Looking forward, the report forecasts a potentially record-breaking year for the Indian box office, predicting that the overall earnings in 2025 could reach ₹13,500 crore—the industry's highest-ever grossing year.

But this milestone will hinge on how well the upcoming high-profile releases perform. The most-awaited second-half titles are "Kantara: Chapter 1" by Rishab Shetty, "War 2" with Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, Rajinikanth's "Coolie", "Akhanda 2" with Nandamuri Balakrishna, Ayushmann Khurrana's "Thama", and Pawan Kalyan's "OG".

The report also analyses the language-wise box office contribution, with Hindi films continuing to hold sway at 40% of the total earnings. Telugu films come next at 20%, followed by Tamil films at 15%.

Interestingly, Hollywood films staged a strong recovery, regaining a double-digit market share—more than 10%—for the first time since 2022, reflecting renewed hunger for international movies among Indian audiences.
