David Corenswet will once again wear his signature red cape as the sequel to James Gunn's summer hit "Superman" will be flying into theaters in less than two years.
DC Films co-head and director James Gunn went on social media Wednesday to announce both the title and date of release for the long-awaited sequel. The new movie, "Superman: Man of Tomorrow," will hit screens on July 9, 2027.
With his announcement, Gunn posted a comic-book-like picture of Superman alongside Lex Luthor in his Warsuit, suggesting the sequel will be running with Luthor's crusade against the Man of Steel. In the comics, Luthor—played by Nicholas Hoult in the film—creates the Warsuit to compete with Superman's abilities. Having had a copycat attempt to destroy Superman in Gunn's original film backfire, it now seems Luthor is intent on doing it his way.
In August, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav officially announced that Gunn would be coming back to pen and direct the sequel after the character got a complete creative reboot. The original film grossed more than $611 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing superhero film of the year.
