Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, the musician who was among those who accompanied Zubeen Garg on the Singapore yacht trip that has been linked to his death, was arrested on Thursday by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Goswami, a longtime colleague of the deceased artist, joined the trip with Garg. Authorities confirmed that he is in custody for questioning, although details on the claims and if charges will officially be brought are not made public.
Sources had hinted that entrepreneur Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organizer of the Northeast festival in Singapore where Garg was to perform, would also be arrested soon. Mahanta, who is said to be at Guwahati airport, has also called the CID and offered to surrender.
Besides, some members of the Singapore Assam Association are being investigated and could be detained. More people who might have been involved in alleged improprieties surrounding the incident might be arrested within the next few days, the authorities hinted.
Simultaneously, Assam organised a tearful farewell for music legend Zubeen Garg, who was cremated with full state honours at Kamarkuchi, on the outskirts of Guwahati. As per his wishes, fans sang "Mayabini" – the song that he had asked to be played during his demise – as thousands marched behind the procession under the blistering sun.
The song, which was originally performed in the 2001 Assamese movie Daag, was particularly close to Garg's heart. The funeral procession started from Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex and attracted huge crowds along the way. Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju, Sarbananda Sonowal, MoS Pabitra Margherita, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and other officials paid their tributes.
Garg's remains were buried after a second autopsy verified no foul play in his demise. The 52-year-old crooner had died on September 19 in Singapore when he went for a swim.
To the emotional scenes, his relatives brought his favorite canines – Iko, Diya, Rambo, and Maya – along for one last goodbye.
Garg, whose music cut across genres, was more than an Assam singer; he was a cultural icon whose work set the soundscapes of a generation.
