In October 2022, Netflix announced that Cavill would be leaving the show after three seasons.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” he explained in a statement. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.”

Hemsworth said he was thrilled to take on the role, complimenting Cavill's work and thanking the team for having faith in him to continue Geralt's tale.

“Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure,” he shared in a statement.

Hemsworth also directly referenced Cavill, thanking him for his interpretation of the character. "Henry, I've been a fan of yours for a long time and was impressed by what you did with this iconic character. I might have some huge boots to fill, but I'm really looking forward to stepping into The Witcher universe," he posted.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in November 2021, Cavill had mentioned his commitment to The Witcher to help creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich see through her vision for a minimum of seven seasons.

Netflix has now confirmed, though, that The Witcher will conclude on its fifth season, with the last two seasons shooting back-to-back.
