The national capital began the day with heavy rain, triggering waterlogging, traffic congestion, and flight delays, spoiling the festive mood of Raksha Bandhan. As per data from Flightradar, a total of 105 flights were delayed because of the inclement weather.
Out of these, 13 flights were arriving at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), while 92 were departing, causing significant disruption to travel plans.
Although there were no major cancellations, airlines and airport authorities issued advisories urging passengers to plan ahead amid traffic congestion and rain-related delays. IndiGo and SpiceJet both posted alerts on X, advising travelers to reach the airport early and monitor their flight status closely.
While all this was going on, Delhi Airport had also allayed the fears of the public by assuring that operations were proceeding fairly normally despite the weather. On X, a post read: "As predicted by the Indian Meteorological Department's forecast, Delhi is facing unfavorable weather conditions. All flight operations at Delhi Airport, however, are normal. Our on-ground staff is working hard with all stakeholders to keep your journey hassle-free."
Rain led to waterlogging in various major locations such as Panchkuian Marg, Connaught Place, and Mathura Road, leading to intense waterlogging and traffic jams. People traveling were severely delayed as several underpasses and major roads went underwater.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared a Red Alert for the whole Delhi area, expecting moderate to heavy rain with possibilities of very intense thunderstorms, particularly over East and Central Delhi during the day.
Though the rain brought relief from the heat and better air quality, the disruptions to daily routines and vacation trips were widespread, with several residents posting pictures and videos of water-logged roads and delayed travel on social media.
