A 57-year-old woman from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, was reported to have been killed while trying to escape a hotel in Kathmandu, Nepal, that had been torched by demonstrators.
The victim, Rajesh Gola, had come to Nepal with her husband, Ramvir Singh Gola, on September 7 and was residing at the Hyatt Regency.
When the "Gen Z" demonstrations grew and protesters torched the hotel on September 9, she tried to flee through a window. With fire shutting down traditional exit pathways, rescuers threw mattresses onto the street and urged people to leap from the upper floors.
Both Ms. Gola and her husband leaped from the fourth floor to the mattresses. Mr. Gola incurred minor injuries, but Ms. Gola received serious injuries and subsequently died in the hospital, according to a report.
Speaking with the press, their son, Vishal, explained that his mother got lost from his father while trying to escape.
"She would have been alive if she had been with my father," he said.
At least 51 individuals have lost their lives and over 1,300 others injured during violent anti-corruption demonstrations in Nepal this week. Most of the fatalities were witnessed on Monday when a crackdown by police on protests against a government shutdown of social media and corruption allegations took place. On Tuesday, demonstrators also torched the parliament complex and homes of some ministers, forcing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign.
The Gen Z demonstrations, which have lately picked up pace, were incited by social media reports on TikTok, Instagram, and other websites that apparently reveal Nepalese politicians' children enjoying luxurious lifestyles.
Nepal's former chief justice, Sushila Karki, will likely be named as interim prime minister.
