As Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi wrapped up her three-day visit to India on Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the trip reinforced the resolve of both countries to deepen a partnership that is central to their shared growth and prosperity, while also serving as a pillar of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
Describing the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit as “highly successful”, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the visit marked another milestone in bilateral ties.
“A memorable visit concludes, advancing India-Japan partnership towards shared horizons. PM @takaichi_sanae of Japan departs from India following the highly successful 16th India-Japan Annual Summit. She was seen off by Minister of State @DrJitendraSingh,” Jaiswal posted on X.
He also shared photographs of the ceremonial farewell in New Delhi.
Takaichi visited India from July 1 to 3 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit.
The two leaders met at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Thursday, where discussions focused on expanding bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
The summit concluded with India and Japan announcing a series of major initiatives, including an economic partnership framework, a defence agreement for the co-development of military hardware and measures to strengthen energy cooperation to cushion the impact of oil supply disruptions. The talks also centred on enhancing mutual trust to navigate an increasingly uncertain global environment.
“The visit reaffirmed the commitment of both sides to nurture a partnership pivotal to the shared growth and prosperity of both countries and an anchor for promoting peace, prosperity and stability in the Indo-Pacific and beyond,” Jaiswal posted.
Earlier on Thursday, Takaichi received a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan, where Prime Minister Modi was present to receive her. The visit marked her first official trip to India as Japan's Prime Minister.
Addressing reporters after the summit, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri described the visit as “extremely successful” and highlighted the “exceptional breadth and depth” of the outcomes achieved during the bilateral discussions.
Misri also said the two leaders discussed preparations for the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Japan next year, adding that 2027 would be celebrated as the India-Japan Year of Shared Horizons.
In another post on X on Thursday, Jaiswal described the engagement as “Taking forward a partnership anchored in trust, shared values and strategic convergence”.
Ahead of the visit, the MEA had said on Wednesday that Takaichi's trip represented an “important step” in advancing the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
