Contested Place of Worship: History and context of the Gyanvapi Mosque imbroglio
The resurrection of a medieval episode of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb's desecration of one particular temple in the ancient city of Kashi (Varanasi) makes it necessary to revise the sequence of developments that precede the edifice that stands as Gyanvapi mosque, adjacent to the famous Kashi Vishwanath temple situated on the western banks of river Ganga.
Assam flood: 18 dead; over 8.39L hit in 32 districts
According to the officials of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) the fresh deaths were reported from Cachar (2), Nagaon, and Hojai districts while one person is missing in Cachar district. An ASDMA release said 8,39,691 people, including 1,45,126,children, of 3,246 villages in 32 districts have been affected. It said that a total of 24,749 stranded persons have been evacuated with the help of disaster response forces and volunteers.

Assam floods: 14 people dead, over 8 lakh affected
Assam State Disaster Management Authority officials said that the four deaths were reported from Cachar (2), Nagaon, and Lakhimpur districts. The Army, the Assam Rifles, the National Disaster Response Force, and the State Disaster Response Force, along with the district administrations, are working round the clock to rescue the stranded people and to provide relief to the marooned citizens.

A bench, headed by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and comprising Justices Surya Kant and P.S. Narasimha said: "Ascertainment of religious character is not barred under Section 3 (of the Places of Worship Act, 1991)." It told senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, representing the masjid committee: "Suppose there is a Parsi temple and there is a cross in the corner of the area. Does the presence of Agyari make the cross Agyari or Agyari Christian? This hybrid character is not unknown in India."
Time to reject fake narratives on martyrs in Kashmir
Martyrdom is an integral part of Islamic culture, faith reaffirmed by death in its cause. Militants were quick to adopt martyrdom as a way of indoctrination, fuelling belief in viewing death as a means of achieving paradise. This helped in recruitment, fundraising and action, a unity with religion and ummah, the community. In Kashmir, Pakistan gave this irrational belief a diabolical twist.
