India deploys its first S-400 system in Punjab to counter threats from Pakistan, China

The highly advanced surface-to-air missile system has the ability to restrict hostile Chinese and Pakistani air-borne operations within their own borders. The S-400 has the capability to neutralise any aerodynamic target within 400 km range, be it cruise missiles or aircrafts, thereby providing a secure defence bubble to military bases and crucial national assets.
India supplies 5 lakh Covaxin doses to Afghanistan

The doses were handed over to the Indira Gandhi Hospital in Kabul. Another batch of additional 5,00,000 doses would be supplied in the coming weeks. India has committed to provide humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people consisting of foodgrains, one million doses of Covid vaccine and essential life saving drugs.
Delhi's AQI settles at 330

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", then between 401 and 500 is considered "severe". The level of PM10 (226) and PM2.5 (122) pollutants in the air were recorded in the "poor" and "very poor" categories, respectively with the latter being the major source of pollutant in the city.
Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra resumes after stampede incident

Divisional Commissioner (Jammu) Raghav Langar told media at Katra (Yatra base camp) that the Yatra, halted for a brief period after the stampede, resumed at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. He said that an inquiry was ordered to ascertain the reasons behind the incident. Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha ordered a high level inquiry into the stampede incident which will be headed by principal secretary home with divisional commissioner Jammu and Additional DGP Jammu as members.
Dassault’s Rafale M all set to undergo trials for India's first indigeneous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant

The Navy will make the Rafale M undergo extensive trials at the 283-metre mock-up ski jump facility at INS Hansa for a period of almost two weeks to understand and assess the jet’s operational compatibility with IAC-1. The 40,000-tonne aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant is currently undergoing comprehensive and exhaustive sea trials at Cochin shipyard in the Indian Ocean.
India logs 22,775 fresh Covid infections, active caseload crosses 1 lakh

Also, 406 deaths were reported in the same time span pushing the toll to 4,81,486. However, the active caseload jumped to 1,04,781 which constitute 0.30 per cent of the country's total positive cases. Meanwhile, the Omicron infection tally has increased to 1,431 across the nation. However, of the total cases, 488 have been discharged from hospitals. So far, 23 states have reported Omicron infections, the Ministry said.
Delhi wakes up to foggy morning

The IMD further predicted a cold wave to continue over the national capital on New Year's day which is likely to prevail till January 3. "Fall in minimum temperatures by 2-4 degrees is likely over most parts of Northwest & Central India during next 24 hours and no significant change thereafter. No significant change in minimum temperatures over most parts of East India during next 24 hours and fall by 3-5 degrees thereafter," the IMD said in its daily forecast.
High level inquiry ordered into Mata Vaishno Devi shrine stampede

"Spoke to Hon'ble Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji. Briefed him about the incident. A high level inquiry has been ordered into today's stampede. "The Inquiry Committee will be headed by Principal Secretary (Home) with ADGP, Jammu and Divisional Commissioner, Jammu as members", Sinha said on his official Twitter handle.
PM to participate in 'Modi Pongal' event in Madurai on Jan 12

The event is part of the Pongal festival being organised by the state unit of the BJP. Modi will be in the state to inaugurate 11 new medical colleges in Tamil Nadu at Virudhunagar on January 12, and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will also be present in the programme. BJP General Secretary, Karu Nagarajan, will be in-charge of the 'Modi Pongal' event for which an integrated committee has already been constituted.
Delhi sees over 1,700 new Covid cases, infection rate crosses 2%

With the new cases, the infection tally has climbed to 14,48,211. However, no fresh Covid fatality has been reported in the last three days and the death toll remains at 25,107. Meanwhile, the Covid infection rate in the city has climbed to 2.44 per cent, the highest in last seven months. According to the Health Department, the city had recorded 2.52 per cent positivity rate on May 24.
