After a fortnight, Covid deaths in Maharashtra jump above 500

On June 26, the state's toll stood at 511, after which it hovered below the 500-level. However, the toll zoomed to 738 on Friday, comprising 200 fresh fatalities and 538 old deaths, though much lower than the peak toll of 2,771 recorded on June 13. With this, the state's death count on account of Covid-19 has reached a whopping 125,034, the worst in the country.
Delhi reports 81 new Covid cases, 3 deaths

The daily Covid positivity rate was at 0.11 per cent, according to the health bulletin issued by the Delhi government. At the same time, 127 people more recovered from the disease, taking the national capital's total number of recoveries to 14, 09,145. With the latest deaths reported on Friday, Delhi total deaths due to Covid have risen to 25,011 till date.
CBI searches 14 premises in U'khand, UP linked to former VC

A CBI spokesperson said that the agency carried out searches at the residential and official premises linked to Kaul, his OSD, and others in Srinagar and Dehradun in Uttarakhand and Noida in Uttar Pradesh. The official said that the agency has also got the details of three lockers in different banks. During the searches, several incriminating documents pertaining to the case have been recovered.
'Can't entertain': SC on plea for time limit on caste quota in education

The plea filed by Subhash Vijayran, who is also an MBBS doctor, argued that in the reservation, a seat of a more meritorious candidate is given to a less meritorious one, and this policy is directly responsible for stagnating the progress of the nation. 'Speaker decides disputes in house': Delhi HC junks Chirag Paswan's plea

Dismissing the plea, a bench of Justice Rekha Palli said: "The right to decide the internal disputes of the House rests with the Speaker." The court said it did not see any merit in the averments raised by the petitioner and also pointed out that petition is a way to settle scores. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, submitted that the petition was "blissfully vague" in the context of basic constitutional issues.

A bench comprising Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and M.R. Shah said that some people have become professional public interest litigants, and this business must stop. The top court made this observation while hearing a plea by Mukesh Jain, who was the co-petitioner with Swami Om. The bench told the petitioner's counsel to tell his client to pay up, otherwise the court will not entertain any PILs from him.
'Don't behave like emperors': SC frowns on unnecessary calling of public officers

The bench noted that the line of separation of powers between judiciary and executive is sought to be crossed by summoning the officers and in a way, putting pressure on them to pass an order as per the whims and fancies of the court. "Summoning of officers frequently is not appreciable at all. The same is liable to be condemned in the strongest words," it added.
After Vaze, ED to record statement of ex-Mumbai Commissioner

Earlier in the day, ED officials said that the agency will question Vaze on Saturday inside the jail premises in Mumbai. On Thursday, a Special Court has granted permission to the ED to visit Vaze and record his statement in the jail. It may be recalled that on May 19, Vaze had claimed to the ED that he had collected Rs 4.70 crore from bars in Mumbai between December 2020-February 2021 allegedly on Deshmukh's orders.
