In the wake of Opposition queries over Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation as Vice-President, Union Home Minister Amit Shah made it clear on Monday (August 25, 2025) that the resignation had been brought about out of concern for his health and dismissed suggestions that Dhankhar was put under "house arrest."
Speaking to ANI in an interview, Shah said, "Dhankhar Sahab's resignation letter is self-explanatory in nature. He has resigned on health grounds. He has also conveyed warm gratitude to the Prime Minister and other Ministers and government colleagues for his good term."
Rebutting Opposition claims regarding Dhankhar's being under house arrest, the Union Home Minister refuted the idea and added that there was no requirement to overthink the former Vice-President's move.
"Your understanding of truth and falsehood seems to be founded on what the opposition is talking. We should not make a big deal Cout of all this. Dhankhar occupied a constitutional position and performed his functions in accordance with the Constitution. He quit for personal health concerns. One needn't take too much time over the matter," Shah said.
He also blamed the Opposition, and especially the Congress, for trying to form "illusions" due to increasing "frustration" from successive election defeats.
"They (Congress) want to generate an illusion among the people. And they will certainly fail, because the direct contact with the people, which we have, is many times more than theirs. We engage with the people. We haven't reached here and sat by accident. I have lost three elections, I believe the frustration level is such that the common sense of judgment, he (Rahul Gandhi) has lost it," Shah replied.
On CISF personnel being present within Parliament, Mr. Shah clarified that any security personnel present within parliament premises is a Marshal and works under the Speaker or Chairperson of the House.
"It is not a question of whose force it is. Previously, it was Delhi Police personnel; today it is CISF," he said, adding Marshals enter the House "only when ordered to do so by the Speaker."
He also asserted confidence that the Constitutional Amendment Bill, aimed at ousting the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Ministers if they were arrested and detained for 30 consecutive days on grave criminal charges, would get passed in Parliament. "I am sure it will be passed. There will be a lot of people in the Congress party and in the opposition who will uphold morality and retain the moral ground.," he added.
Mr. Shah explained that the Bills are not designed to target any specific party or leader, pointing out that the courts would be a check against abuse.
He further stated that the legislation is fair in the sense that it provides for leaders who obtain bail even after 30 days to administer the oath and resume office.
"They can take an oath once they have obtained bail. Our central argument is that nobody can govern from prison. If they obtain bail within 40 days, they can take the oath again. This should instill them with confidence that once they have obtained bail, they can resume their job," stated Shah.
