Australian authorities have launched an investigation into an online death threat directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his scheduled visit to Melbourne on July 9, according to Australian media reports. Investigators have reportedly traced an IP address linked to the social media post.
The alleged threat appeared in the comments section of a Facebook post promoting the "Melbourne Meets Modi" community event, which is set to be held at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium on July 9 during the Prime Minister's Australia visit, according to a report by The Australia Today.
The comment, posted from an account using the name Abu Mustafa (translated), stated: "the roof tops of the stadium better close during the event or he will be coming to Australia for his death".
According to The Australia Today, the matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police on the same day the comment was posted online.
Citing sources familiar with the probe, the publication reported that investigators have identified the IP address associated with the account and are examining the circumstances surrounding the message. Authorities are also assessing whether any criminal offences may have been committed.
The Australian Federal Police has not issued any public statement on the investigation so far.
Australian media reports noted that threats against visiting heads of government are handled with the highest level of seriousness by law enforcement authorities. Security for high-profile international visits is typically coordinated by multiple agencies, including the Australian Federal Police, state police and specialist protective security units.
The reported threat has emerged just days before Modi's official visit to Australia, during which he is expected to participate in bilateral meetings as well as community engagements, including the "Melbourne Meets Modi" event.
