Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reiterated India's unequivocal support for peace, stability and prosperity in Nepal and said the neighboring country was one of India's dearest friends. Addressing a huge public rally at the historic Kangla Fort at Imphal, the Prime Minister asserted that India always stands for Nepal's development and happiness.
While extending greetings on behalf of 140 crore Indians to former Chief Justice Sushila Karki on assuming the office of Prime Minister of Nepal's Interim Government, Modi said that her milestone appointment as the nation's first woman Prime Minister is a testament to the resilience of women empowerment. Modi also drew comparison with the vibrant role Manipuri women perform in society, pointing out that women empowerment is one of his government's priorities no less.
“After the recent youths’ movement in Nepal, India is hopeful of the neighbouring country’s peace, stability and progress. Democracy would be further strengthened in Nepal,” the Prime Minister said.
Emphasizing the close historical, cultural, and religious affinity between the two countries, Modi reminded that India has always been with Nepal during its transition periods. He appreciated the grit of the Nepali people and applauded the youth for painting and cleaning government buildings voluntarily in the midst of political upheaval.
“I also want to thank the people of Nepal who, despite such turbulent days, have kept their democratic values as the ultimate goal,” PM Modi said, drawing applause from the crowd.
The Prime Minister once again reaffirmed India's resolve to be with Nepal in its democratic journey, reiterating that "we want both nations to progress together.
On Friday evening, 73-year-old Sushila Karki, Nepal's previous Chief Justice, was sworn in as the nation's first female Prime Minister, heading an interim government. She was sworn in by President Ramchandra Paudel after days of mass political turmoil.
Karki was appointed following weeks of protest that brought down the K. P. Sharma Oli government, which had attracted widespread criticism for the social media ban. Her promotion was a result of agreement between President Paudel, Nepal's top military commanders, and the youth leaders who led the protest.
