‘Asia Cup ho jaye bas…’ Quips Rashid Latif Amid Tournament Uncertainty

"It will be extremely difficult for Pakistan to compete against a solid Indian team on September 14. Asia Cup ho jaye bas," Latif said, indicating that given the unpredictability of Pakistan at the moment, he is just wishing the tournament goes by without any hassles.

Ex-Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has raised eyebrows about Pakistan's current form prior to their closely watched Asia Cup game against India on September 14.

Speaking candidly to IANS, Latif admitted that the Men in Green have not been playing to their potential and will require a complete mindset and execution change to pose an actual challenge.

"It will be extremely difficult for Pakistan to compete against a solid Indian team on September 14. Asia Cup ho jaye bas," Latif said, indicating that given the unpredictability of Pakistan at the moment, he is just wishing the tournament goes by without any hassles.

The former wicketkeeper-batsman referred to the team's inconsistent performances over the last few months that have generated criticism over their level of preparation. "Humari cricket hawa may chal rhi hai… We lost to Bangladesh and the West Indies — games we shouldn't have lost. Our captain may be good, but playing three formats is not easy. We have talent, but we are not taking the right calls as yet," he elucidated.

Though infamous for their explosive potential, Pakistan have faltered with a string of unanticipated setbacks — such as against Bangladesh and a weakened West Indies team — raising questions about their preparedness for a high-profile tournament like the Asia Cup. They start their campaign with a game against Oman on September 12, before the marquee group-stage encounter against India in the UAE.

Latif underscored that in front of a well-equilibrated Indian team, Pakistan needs to deliver more than mere raw ability. "There is ability, but execution and decision-making are the most critical things, particularly against a side like India," he opined. He highlighted the imperative of staying calm under pressure and more prudent management of turning points.

Even as the India-Pakistan meeting continues to be the most hotly anticipated game in international cricket, Latif cautioned that Pakistan's recent performance is concerning. With the countdown ongoing towards the headline-grabbing game, he hopes that the team can find its rhythm and instill faith in the fans in time.
