Australia Slump to 5th Consecutive ODI Series Defeat VS South Africa; Ngidi Equals Ambrose Milestone

Choosing to bat first, South Africa scored a challenging 277-run total, courtesy of an excellent 88 off 78 balls by Matthew Breetzke. Tristan Stubbs provided a good support to him with a crucial 74-run innings, making sure the visitors put up a tough target for the Aussies.

South Africa once again proved too powerful for Australia in ODIs, clinching the three-match series with a dominant win in the second match at Cairns. Lungi Ngidi was the star of the show with the ball, taking five wickets as the hosts fell 84 runs shy of the 278-run target, being bowled out for 193 in just 38 overs. With this victory, the Proteas achieved an unbeatable 2-0 advantage in the series.

Australia's batting again let them down, with Josh Inglis being the sole shining light. His stylish 87-run innings maintained the chase for a while, but his exit put an end to any hope of a fightback as the Proteas tightened their stranglehold.

Ngidi’s five-wicket haul was the highlight, his second fifer against Australia in ODIs. With this, he now sits fourth on the list of most ODI fifers against Australia, trailing only Curtly Ambrose, Shane Bond, and Trent Boult. Supporting him, Nandre Burger and Senuran Muthusamy picked up two wickets apiece to dismantle the Australian batting lineup.

The win was South Africa's fifth consecutive bilateral ODI series victory against Australia. Historically, the Proteas have been in charge of this affair, winning eight of the last 10 series and 17 of the last 21 completed ODIs between the two teams.

For Australia, the defeat continued an alarming dip in the 50-over game. They have won only one of their past eight completed ODIs, and this series loss was their third straight bilateral ODI loss—a feat not achieved in six years. They were previously beaten 2-0 by Sri Lanka in February and 1-2 by Pakistan in November 2024. Alarming is the fact that Australia have not scored 200 runs in their previous four completed ODIs.

Looking back at the win, South Africa's acting captain Aiden Markram was thrilled with beating Australia in their own backyard. It was "a great feeling to beat a strong Australian team and achieve a series win Down Under," he stated.
