The Indian cricket team was subjected to the wrath of the crowd at Lord's on Day 4 of the third Test as boos rang out across the stadium.
There was friction towards the end of the final session when Akash Deep called for the physio to treat him on his right leg, similar to what Zak Crawley did the day before for England — something that was labeled as 'time-wasting' by some.
The audience expressed their displeasure vocally, and England captain Ben Stokes put fuel on the flames by sarcastically clapping KL Rahul, copying India captain Shubman Gill's previous snarky clap against Crawley on Day 3. The incident halted play for a brief period, but it was Stokes who had the last laugh. It was a poetic finale to the day's action as he dismissed Akash Deep with an excellent ball on the final delivery.
India's pursuit of 193 started on shaky grounds and by stumps, they were battling at four for 58. KL Rahul was able to remain grounded at one end, not out on 33, despite wickets falling all around him.
The highest order presented largely no resistance. Yashasvi Jaiswal got out without opening his score, while Karun Nair (14) and the captain Shubman Gill (6) made little contribution, leaving India 135 runs short with one day remaining.
Earlier, England's second innings were over at 192 in 62.1 overs. Washington Sundar was brilliant with the ball, taking 4 wickets for merely 22 runs. Jasprit Bumrah (2/38) and Mohammed Siraj (2/31) also took two each, with Akash Deep taking one.
England had reached 175 for six at the resumption of the evening session but folded up in no time, losing their last four wickets for 17 runs. Washington got rid of Ben Stokes for 33 after tea and subsequently got rid of Shoaib Bashir (2) to complete the innings. Bumrah got the scalp of Chris Woakes (10) and Brydon Carse (1) in the late collapse.
