Glenn McGrath Fires "5-0" Ashes Warning to England Following India’s Memorable Draw

McGrath’s confident forecast follows England’s recent showing in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, where they drew 2-2 with India. He is convinced that England’s current squad will struggle to challenge Australia on their home turf.

Legendary fast bowler Glenn McGrath has made a striking prediction ahead of the eagerly awaited 2025-26 Ashes series, forecasting that Australia, led by Pat Cummins, will sweep England 5-0 in the five-Test contest scheduled for later this year.

This prediction isn’t merely optimistic but is grounded in recent history and current form. England has not won an Ashes series since 2015, and their last Test victory in Australia dates back to 2011. In fact, the visitors have failed to secure a single Test win on Australian soil for over a decade.

Conversely, Australia has established a near fortress at home. Under Cummins’ leadership, the Australian side has been formidable, claiming victory in 11 of their last 15 home Tests, suffering only two defeats and two draws. Their lethal bowling lineup—including Cummins himself, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and the experienced spinner Nathan Lyon—remains one of the most feared in international cricket.

However, McGrath conceded that Australia’s batting lineup, particularly at the top, has faced some challenges recently. Players like Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green, and Marnus Labuschagne have been battling with form. Adding to the uncertainty is young opener Sam Konstas, who is still trying to solidify his place following David Warner’s retirement.

On the other hand, McGrath believes England’s bowling attack also requires strengthening. He sees the real battle in the upcoming Ashes as one between England’s top seven batsmen and Australia’s powerful bowling unit. He singled out Joe Root and Harry Brook as key figures in England’s lineup to watch during the five-match series.

Since Brendon McCullum took over as head coach, England has won 25 of their 41 Test matches, largely credited to the aggressive “Bazball” style of play. Yet, the team still awaits its first series victory in a five-Test format under this approach.

While praising England’s fearless Bazball philosophy, McGrath noted that the team must improve its mental focus, especially over the course of a long Test series.

He concluded, “I love seeing sportspeople go out there and play without fear. That's what Baz is looking to bring into this England team—play without fear. I'd like to see a bit more accountability and the mental side of the game, just them switched on a bit more. It's exciting.”
