Middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer, who was ignored by the selectors for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series and has been made India A skipper recently, has apparently sought a break from red-ball cricket, keeping himself out of the two-match home Test series against the West Indies later this year.
The move comes after Iyer resigned as India A captain and quit the Lucknow camp mid-way into the current series against Australia A.
The Indian Express reported that Iyer has told the BCCI that he cannot play for four or more consecutive days because of ongoing physical problems. Though he was able to play shorter sessions in the previous season's Ranji Trophy, the longer demands of Test and India A cricket rule out such playing. Confronting these issues, he has decided to retire from the longer format.
This is another break from red-ball cricket for Iyer, who was first dropped in the middle of India's home series against England in February 2024. He met with the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel before officially informing the BCCI, after pulling out of the second unofficial Test against Australia A.
Iyer had been on the list for selection for the West Indies Tests, particularly following Karun Nair's disappointing outing in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy match against England. Being recently named India A captain was also seen as a move towards Test preparation.
Iyer's red-ball resume is still respectable, with a century on debut and impressive innings against New Zealand.
His recent form domestically has not been very consistent, with high points like 233 against Odisha cancelled out by low scores in the Duleep Trophy. His performances in white-ball cricket, on the other hand, have been scintillating, including the ICC Champions Trophy with India and leading Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 finals.
Though leading Punjab Kings exceptionally well in the IPL 2025 and being one of their leading scorers, Iyer was also left out of the Men's T20 Asia Cup. Nevertheless, the selectors seem to see Iyer as a red-ball specialist, a format the Mumbai batter is increasingly avoiding, as this letter shows.
