In a shocking development for the India A team, Shreyas Iyer resigned as captain merely hours before the second First-Class game against Australia A.

The team management then installed Dhruv Jurel as the India A captain for the second red-ball game. Neither Iyer nor management revealed the precise reason for his resignation, but media reports claimed it was for "personal" reasons.

"Yes, Shreyas is taking a break and has returned to Mumbai. He has informed the selectors that he won't be able to play in the second four-day match against Australia A. However, he remains in fray for a spot in the middle-order when the selectors meet to pick the squad for the West Indies series," a Times of India report quoted a source as saying.

Iyer had played in the opening India A match against Australia A, and he had made 8 and 13 runs in his two innings. In the match, he also seemed to fall prey to an arguable umpiring call against spinner Corey Rocchiccioli.

India A, even with Iyer's poor batting effort, performed well, and they put on 531 runs following Australia's score of 532.

Iyer was not included in the Indian team for the tour of England and was also omitted from the T20I team for the Asia Cup 2025. The batter is making all efforts to become a vital player in all formats. Already a regular in India's ODI team, Iyer was a key performer during last year's Champions Trophy victory.

Though, he has failed to find a spot in the Test and T20I teams. The next red-ball commitment for India is against West Indies from October 2nd, and the team is likely to be announced within the next few days.
