It has been over a week of suspense, and the Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee will now convene on Tuesday to finalize India's team for the Men's T20 Asia Cup, from September 9 to 28 in the UAE.
The players chosen for the eight-nation event will be among the central figures in India's build-up to next year's Men's T20 World Cup, to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
India's first match is scheduled for September 10, and the spotlight is on the possible inclusion of Shreyas Iyer, Jitesh Sharma, Rinku Singh, and Riyan Parag. These four players are expected to get a thorough discussion from the five-person selection panel.
Suryakumar Yadav, who has been recovering after hernia surgery, will captain the team. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are likely to be in their positions, having been openers since the Bangladesh home series last year. Even with an uneven IPL season, Samson could retain his position, since team management seems to prefer its core set of players. His setbacks involved a side strain and inability to deal with Jofra Archer's pace in T20Is against England earlier this year.
The choice of a back-up opener continues to be a matter of contention between Test captain Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jaiswal is now more likely to be picked for the Asia Cup, but selectors will also have in mind India's first Test against the West Indies on October 2 in Ahmedabad—just five days after the Asia Cup final in Dubai.
Firm in India's batting line-up are Suryakumar, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel. Shreyas Iyer's cause is favored due to his spin-hitting prowess, better short-ball handling, and consistent performances for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025.
Jitesh Sharma is favored to fill the reserve wicketkeeper-batter position, who can also play the finisher's role owing to his big-hitting and creative shots. His remarkable IPL 2025 season contributed to Royal Challengers Bengaluru winning their first-ever IPL title.
India's last T20I series against England in January, Rinku Singh can be left out. A finisher for India and Kolkata Knight Riders by tradition, his poor IPL form and India's possible preference for an all-rounder who can handle Dubai and Abu Dhabi conditions might prove against him.
As Nitish Kumar Reddy continues to recuperate from a knee ligament issue, the all-rounder spot will also witness competition in the form of Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar, and Shivam Dube. Sundar's ability with his off-spin and batting prowess gives him a strong case, while Dube has a similar skill set to Nitish. Riyan brings balance through batting and occasional spinning, but is yet to make an impact. With Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Varun Chakaravarthy likely to spearhead the spin attack, the committee will have to choose between Sundar and Riyan.
In the fast-bowling division, India are likely to have Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah (if picked), and Arshdeep Singh. The committee will then have to pick between Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Harshit Rana to fill the pace attack.
Eventually, the Asia Cup team will provide the earliest preview of India's plan for the T20 World Cup, and discussions over the selection will carry on until the tournament begins.
