India's T20 team for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE has raised some serious eyebrows, specifically with regard to the selection of Shubman Gill. However, chief selector Ajit Agarkar has made it clear that Gill would not be automatically included in the playing XI, leaving the decision to the coach and captain.
"Captain and coach will have the call on the best balance for the team. When we reach Dubai, we will have a better idea. There are more options now. Shubman has been in terrific form anyway for the past few months. So has Sanju. So two good options, and one is Abhishek," Agarkar said.
Gill’s inclusion in the squad came despite missing recent white-ball games due to schedule clashes between formats. In his absence, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma had opportunities, which Agarkar said they had capitalized on effectively. Gill has also been named vice-captain, replacing Axar Patel, despite his limited T20 appearances because of commitments with the Test and ODI teams.
Yashasvi Jaiswal's exclusion from the regular team was termed unfortunate. "With Yashasvi Jaiswal, I mean, it's unfortunate again. Abhishek Sharma, what he has done in the past few months or a year or so he has been with the side. Plus, the fact that he can bowl a little bit gives us an option, if needed, by the captain.". One among these boys was bound to miss out. It's just that Yashasvi may have to wait for his turn. In the case of Shreyas, I mean, we can do without that. Again, no fault of his. Nor ours. It's just that we can select only 15 and, at the moment, he may have to wait for his turn," Agarkar clarified.
On the fitness of pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who played just three Tests in England, Agarkar pointed out that the brief break following the England series enables rest. "Clearly, there has been a break post-the England series too. The team management, all the officials, and support staff people are always in touch (with him). We have, it's not only now, even prior to his injury, we attempted to take care of him, because we realize how precious he is. We want him fit for all the major games, you know, international games, but there are World Cups, there are Champions Trophy, or major series like the England or Australia, we want him fit always. That is impossible all the time. Because he's acquired the injury for the past 4-3 years, there is additional time spent on how one-of-a-kind and how special he is. And it will not change, it will not change, whether this series or perhaps the next 6 months. As we move forward, how he is feeling currently, when we need him as a team, which is most likely the most significant thing," he said.
Agarkar also spoke about Shreyas Iyer's exclusion and the omission of Sai Sudharsan. "There are a million players out there, so in a way, all of them have missed out. We have only 15, so someone or the other will miss out," he said, further stating of Iyer, "Regarding Shreyas, who can he be replaced with? No fault of his, nor ours.". Right now, you can simply select 15. So he will have to wait for the opportunity.
Suryakumar Yadav and Agarkar both emphasized that the Asia Cup is the start of India's preparation phase for the next T20 World Cup. On whether Gill's vice-captaincy indicates potential leadership to come, Agarkar said, "He captained in T20I (Zimbabwe), and in the Test side, he is already captain, and as Surya said, he was vice-captain in the previous T20, so we clearly see some leadership in him, and his England form was what we had expected.". He clearly outdid us all, with the kind of performance that he displayed with the bat, which is a good omen when there is so much pressure on you as a captain."
