India wrapped up the nail-biting Asia Cup 2025 final with a five-wicket win in Dubai on Sunday but the victory was marred by a big controversy.
The Indian team was unable to take part in the post-match functions with the Asia Cup trophy as Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi took both the trophy and the championship medals out of the stadium.
Though it was expected that India would not accept the trophy from Naqvi, his refusal to hand over the trophy at all came as a shock to all.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia expressed his surprise at the actions of Naqvi, condemning him for removing the trophy and medals from the stadium. He also explained why India did not accept the trophy from Naqvi, who happens to be the Pakistan Cricket Board chief.
"India is waging a war against a country, and the leader of that nation was supposed to present the trophy to us. We cannot accept the trophy from someone who represents a nation that is at war with our nation. So we have not accepted that trophy, but that does not mean that the gentleman will not take the trophy and the medals, which are to be presented to our nation, to his own hotel room. That is wholly unexpected, and we hope that his good sense will win, and he will return the trophy to India as early as possible, which will bring some semblance of morality. At least we are hoping that from him," Saikia said during a conversation with ANI following the match.
Throughout the Asia Cup, the Indian team consistently snubbed friendly gestures from their Pakistani counterparts. In the final, broadcasters arranged for two different presenters—Ravi Shastri and Waqar Younis—to interact with Suryakumar Yadav and Salman Ali Agha at the toss, respectively.
Saikia added that the BCCI intends to lodge a strong protest against Naqvi’s actions.
"We will file a very strong protest against the gentleman's conduct in today's prize distribution ceremony," he stated.
In a separate statement, the BCCI announced a prize money of Rs 21 crores for India's team and support staff to mark their outstanding play in the tournament.
"BCCI is extremely happy, and we congratulate the Indian cricket team for defeating Pakistan hands down at the group stage, at the Super Four, as well as in the final. All three matches were one-sided, and we congratulate our players as well as the support staff for bringing a lot of glory to our country. We are very proud of our team, and they have excellently delivered on the cricket pitch. Our armed forces have delivered it in the border area. Now the same thing has been repeated in Dubai. So this is an excellent moment, a momentous occasion for Indian cricket... We have decided that there will be a cash reward to the Indian team, which will be Rs 21 crores. It will be distributed amongst the players and all the support staff," he said.
