India head coach Gautam Gambhir was full of pride about his young team's resilience and togetherness after a thrilling six-run win over England at The Oval, which completed a 2-2 draw in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test series.
The result not only prevented what would have been a third consecutive Test series loss under Gambhir’s leadership but also served as a strong rebuttal to those doubting the capabilities of the newly-formed team led by Shubman Gill.
With veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having recently retired from the longest format, India’s revamped red-ball unit stepped up impressively, showing resilience, composure, and team spirit while facing difficult English conditions.
Gambhir, in a behind-the-scenes video shared by the BCCI addressed his players and praised their commitment in addition to setting visions for the future.
"It's an outstanding result-a 2-2 result, congratulations to all.". So remember, we will keep getting better, we will keep working hard, we will keep improving our areas – because if we keep doing that, we can dominate Test cricket for a very long period. People will come & go, but the culture of the dressing room should always be like that people want to be part of this culture, that is what we want to create. Good luck, enjoy yourself. You can take a couple of days off, and you deserve every bit of it. What you guys have achieved, you deserve every bit of it. Congratulations,” Gambhir said.
The series also saw the rise of Washington Sundar as a dependable all-rounder. His contributions with both bat and ball earned him the Impact Player of the Series medal, which was handed over by senior teammate Ravindra Jadeja.
Sundar played all four Tests and emerged as one of the key performers for India, scoring 284 runs, including a match-saving unbeaten century (101*) at Old Trafford in Manchester.
Looking back on his experience, Sundar stated: "Clearly, it's a wonderful blessing to be playing four games on the spin in a country like England. Always wished to do extremely well here. And as a side, just the manner in which we approached, every single day was fabulous. The energy we generated particularly from a fielding point of view, the energy we generated, we were always there for one another. Thank you so much for all this."
Having this series under their belts, the young Indian team has not just picked up some valuable experience but has also built a strong base for future success in red-ball cricket — something that was clearly felt by their head coach and players.
